2026 Census
Why accurate homelessness data matters
Every five years, the Australian Census provides one of the most important sources of information about homelessness in our communities. Accurate Census data helps build a clearer picture of the number of people experiencing homelessness, the circumstances they are facing, and where additional support is needed. When people aren't counted, their needs can remain invisible. Every person included in the Census helps build a stronger understanding of homelessness in our region and supports the case for better housing, services and investment.
This information plays a vital role in shaping government policy, planning local services, securing funding, and strengthening advocacy efforts. It helps organisations tell the story of homelessness in our region and demonstrate the growing need for housing and support services.
How Agencies can help
Agencies and services have an important role to play in ensuring people experiencing homelessness are counted. By working alongside Australian Bureau of Statistics field officers, services can help identify and connect with people who may otherwise be missed, including those sleeping rough or staying in crisis, emergency or temporary accommodation.
Accurately counting every person helps ensure their experiences are recognised and contributes to better planning, stronger advocacy and improved outcomes for our community.
